Chapter 1: first farmers- Breakthroughs to agriculture
Around 12,000 years ago, agriculture brought a new way of life that was very different from the earlier practice of gathering and hunting. Because by that time, we were no longer depending on what we found in nature but also were consistently modifying nature. As the book says that: “ Among the most revolutionary aspects of the age of agriculture was a new relationship between humankind and other living things, for now men and women were not simply using what they found in nature but were actively changing nature as well.”(27)
Agriculture revolution happened at the end of the last Ice Age which was began around 16,000 years ago. The global warming process melted the ice and make the land more productive for the plants to grow. As a result, the Agriculture revolution occurred. Then the idea of Agriculture eventually spread out all around the world via migration and diffusion.
Agriculture revolution is not just simply changed the way people obtain food, it also completely changed the structure of the entire human society. Before the Agricultural Era, human are travelers. We traveled all over the place to get what we need for survival. But after the invention of the Agriculture, we became settlers. We settled in some places and created our food source around the area. So, we no longer travel around to gather food. Therefore, the concept of ownership started to come into play. We claimed the ownership of the land, the property, and the food. Then we started to learn how to store, share and trade our food.
Agriculture brings a significant change to human society. Without the invention of the Agriculture, human society will not look as same as today.
